Doctor sued for sending abortion pills to patient

Dec 15, 2024

Washington [US], December 15: Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has sued New York state physician Margaret Carpenter after she prescribed and sent abortion pills to a patient in Texas via telemedicine, Reuters reported on December 13.
In a lawsuit filed in a New York court , Mr. Paxton accused Ms. Carpenter of violating abortion laws and not having a medical license in Texas, and asked for a fine of $100,000 for each violation.
New York law protects doctors who provide abortions to patients from other states. Texas, on the other hand, has strict rules about access to abortion, including a ban on doctors sending abortion pills to patients via shipping services. The 20-year-old Texas patient was hospitalized after bleeding from complications from the medication, Paxton said. The case highlights the shortcomings of litigation related to differences in the legal systems of many states.
